FORMER IKWERRE LGA CHAIRMAN 

Former Ikwerre Local Government Chairman Samuel Nwanosike has expressed surprise at the high voter turnout during Rivers State’s local government elections, praising citizens’ commitment to the democratic process.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV from 2:22, Nwanosike described witnessing strong community participation across age groups during the polling. “I was surprised by the turnout of the mammoth crowd that came here to vote in Ikwerre LGA. As a leader, I have to be patient to allow others to vote before I voted, and yet you can see the elderly ones—they believe in the process,” he stated.

The former chairman emphasized voters’ confidence in the electoral system and its role in grassroots democracy. “It’s not a shabby process; it’s a process that they believe will entrench democracy at the grassroots level, and that’s why they’re coming out to say, ‘Look, we believe in this process, believe in the candidates of the various parties that we want to vote for.’ And we’ll wait here to see that the election is done and the results are announced. That’s why we’re here,” Nwanosike said.

He commended the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for conducting the elections according to established procedures. “So I’m happy, and I commend RSIEC for making sure that this is happening as planned and they’re following the rules of the law that set up their organization. So it’s very wonderful. Everybody’s good,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has characterized the local government elections as clearing obstacles for democratic structures to return to Rivers State. According to the minister, the polls have resolved potential conflicts between the governor and State Assembly by ensuring grassroots representation, removing what he described as stumbling blocks that could have triggered clashes between executive and legislative branches.
