Famous Nollywood star Juwon Adewunmi has shared some experiences from her move from Nigeria to the United States, emphasizing how much effort people put in to earn money in America
In a video shared on Biola Adebayo Ent TV’s official YouTube channel during an interview, she admitted that when she began working in the U.S., she would often find herself in tears, as life was much tougher than she anticipated.
When asked whether her move to the U.S. was beneficial, Juwon Adewunmi responded, “Had I realized how challenging it would be to live in America, I would have chosen to stay in Nigeria.
Upon arriving in America, I cried frequently and regretted my choice to move away from Nigeria.
I used to tell my friends that people in America put in more effort to earn money compared to those in Nigeria. In Nigeria, a salesgirl can relax in the shop, but in America, you have to be on your feet for 12 hours straight.”

WHAT A SHAME I'M STILL TREKKING AND JUMPING BUSES AT MY AGE.
Relocating to the UK is a dream for many Nigerians. The promise of better opportunities, stable income, and a higher quality of life makes it seem like the ultimate escape plan.
But what if I told you that moving abroad doesn’t automatically fix your life?
In fact, for many people, it introduces a whole new set of struggles no one prepares you for.
🌍 The Dream vs The Reality
Before relocating, everything looks perfect on social media. You see beautiful apartments, clean streets, and people living what appears to be a “soft life.”
But behind the scenes, the story is very different.
Many immigrants arrive in the UK expecting instant success… only to face harsh realities.
💸 1. The Cost of Living Can Break You
The UK is expensive—very expensive.
Rent alone can take a huge portion of your salary. Add bills, transportation, food, and taxes, and you may find yourself barely surviving.
Some people who lived comfortably in Nigeria end up struggling paycheck to paycheck abroad.
😔 2. Loneliness Hits Hard
Back home, you’re surrounded by family, friends, and a strong support system.
In the UK, it’s different.
You may find yourself alone most of the time, especially in your early months. The cold weather, quiet environment, and busy lifestyle can make it even worse.
Mental health struggles are more common than people admit.
💼 3. Jobs Are Not Always What You Expect
Many people assume they’ll land high-paying jobs immediately.
Reality? You might have to:
Take jobs below your qualifications
Work long hours
Do physically demanding roles
Degrees and experience from Nigeria don’t always translate easily in the UK job market.
🏠 4. Housing Is a Major Challenge
Finding accommodation can be stressful and expensive.
Some people end up:
Sharing small spaces with strangers
Living far from their workplace
Paying huge deposits upfront
It’s not the luxury lifestyle you imagined.
🧾 5. Bills Never Stop Coming
In the UK, bills are constant:
Electricity
Council tax
Internet
Transportation
Before you know it, your salary is gone.
Saving money becomes a serious challenge.
⚠️ 6. Relocation Doesn’t Fix Personal Problems
This is the biggest truth many people ignore.
If you were struggling financially, emotionally, or mentally before relocating, those issues don’t magically disappear.
In some cases, they become worse.
💡 So, Should You Still Relocate?
Relocating to the UK is not a bad decision—but it must be a well-informed one.
You need:
Proper planning
Financial backup
The right expectations
Because the truth is simple:
👉 Location alone does not determine success.
📌 Final Thoughts
Moving to the UK can change your life—but not always in the way you expect.
Don’t be deceived by social media highlights. Understand the full picture before making such a big decision.
Sometimes, the life you’re running from might follow you… no matter where you go. And most times home might be better than away.
