Reactions As Alleged ‘Water Goddess’ Turn to Water to Evade Arrest During EFCC Raid in Ebony

A dramatic scene reportedly unfolded in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, after a boutique owner allegedly transformed into water to evade arrest during an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operation.

The incident which was reported by The Nation via its X account on Saturday, November 22, 2025, stirred confusion and amusement across social media.

According to the report, EFCC operatives stormed the boutique located on Ogoja Road in connection with what officials described as a multi-million naira fraud investigation.

Witnesses claimed that the businesswoman, identified as Madam Nneoma, vanished in an unusual manner as officers approached.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the shop owner suddenly disappeared, leaving her clothing behind. “She was arranging clothes, then suddenly water was everywhere. Her wrapper and blouse just dropped,” a salesgirl said, adding that the woman had long been regarded locally as a “water goddess.”

The report noted that some EFCC operatives were visibly stunned, with a few allegedly attempting to collect the water left on the floor as evidence.

The account quickly drew mixed reactions online, with many users dismissing the story as superstition while others poked fun at the situation.

One user criticised the tone of the report, saying, “You people are not serious. We are grappling with the survival of this nation and the safety of the citizenry at the moment. We don't have the time for this DC and Marvel superhero fantasies.”

Another responded humorously, writing, “I was there when she turned to water. I was able to fetch 20 litres that I will use to make eba tomorrow for lunch.”

A different user offered a more sceptical take, suggesting the incident may have been staged. “She most likely planned it whereby, as the bubbles she or her supporters started, she escaped amidst the confusion that evidently followed,” the user commented. The individual added that similar claims of supernatural escape often emerge in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa but rarely withstand scrutiny. “The belief in this nation and many other African countries has hurt them. Yet, no one can point to any adjudicated case of such voodoo power.”
