U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Nigeria, saying Washington will take measures the country “is not going to be happy about” if Abuja does not act to stop killings he blamed on Islamist militants.

The comment was part of a wider address in which Trump said he had placed Nigeria on a religious-freedom watch list and ordered the Defense Department to prepare for possible military action. He also threatened to stop all U.S. aid and assistance if Nigeria “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”

Trump used vivid language to underline his threat, saying the United States “may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’” and warned that any action would be swift and severe. Those words have escalated tensions between Washington and Abuja.

Officials in Abuja pushed back, insisting Nigeria is committed to protecting all citizens and welcoming international assistance — but only if it respects Nigerian sovereignty. Government spokespeople have also highlighted the complex security picture, noting that violence in Nigeria affects both Muslims and Christians

Analysts warn a U.S. military strike would be legally and logistically fraught, and could inflame anti-foreign sentiment inside Nigeria while doing little to solve long-running local conflicts that have deep political, ethnic and economic roots. Observers say diplomatic pressure and security cooperation, not unilateral strikes, are likelier to produce results.

For now, the watchful tone from Washington has put Abuja under new international scrutiny. Nigerian leaders face a choice between accepting U.S. help under carefully negotiated terms or resisting what they call external pressure on their domestic security policy.
